International Sword Swallowers Day 2014

Down the hatch without a scratch – Happy sword swallowers day!If you arn’t aware of what Sword Swallowers Day is, allow me to explain. Sword Swallowers Day is a world wide event which dedicates and entire day to the art of sword swallowing, which will mark its 7th year this time around. Professional sword swallowers meet up at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! attractions around the world to demonstrate this ancient skill. The event falls on the last Saturday of February, to coincide with National Swallowing Disorders Month and is run by the organisation Sword Swallowers Association International (SSAI) which uses the events to do a number of things;
  • To provide the general public with knowledge on sword swallowing and dispel any myths.
  • To raise awareness that the 4000 year old art is still alive.
  • To honor sword swallowers of the past.
  • To raise awareness of the contributions sword swallowers have made to science and medicine.
  • To raise donations for Esophageal Cancer Research and the Injured Sword Swallowers Relief Fund (to which Ripley Entertainment match all donations collected).

If you haven’t visited it already, you can see some fantastic sword swallowing videos over at the official Johnny Strange YouTube channel.

Budapest Tattoo Convention 2014

johnny-strange-matt-gone-tattooed-manJohnny Strange recently visited Hungary where his self and The Human Checkerboard, Matt Gone, performed at the 2014 IV. International Budapest Tattoo Convention and it went down a treat.

Matt Gone is known world wide as ‘The Checkered Man’ with 98% of his body covered in ink, including the whites of his eyes and even his tongue. His transformation into The Human Checkerboard we see before us has been a long time in the works, when he got his first tattoo at just 14 years old.

This years Budapest Tattoo Convention hosted over 120 tattoo artists from around the world, countless seminars and venders including Harley Davidson and Rock Eagle. Budapest is one of my favourite places in the world to visit, not just because they use a metre stick as a measurement for beer but because the country is rich in history and and is one of the most photogenic places in Europe.
