It’s International Sword Swallowers Day; yes, believe it or not we actually have a day dedicated to it!
Once again, every year like clockwork, sword swallowers around the world flock to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museums to demonstrate the ancient art of sword swallowing.
This daring feat has been around for hundreds of years, being mentioned as far back as 410AD, however as it is so dangerous there are currently less than 60 active sword swallowers alive in the world today, making it a very rare art form.
Johnny Strange spent the afternoon speaking with James Whale live on BBC Radio Kent about this amazing feat and what exactly International Sword Swallowers Day is all about.

It’s international Star Wars day (May 4th), and what better way for a sword swallower
to celebrate than swallowing a lightsaber!
Heres an image of Johnny Strange swallowing a lightsaber, or at least the closest thing you can to one, a 2000v neon sword. Johnny swallows a fragile thin glass tube filled with a deadly poisonous neon gas something very few sword swallowers in the world have ever attempted, let alone managed.
Happy Star Wars day!

It seems there’s a day to celebrate everything; World Hugging Day (21st Jan), International Talk Like A Pirate Day (19th Sept), National Pizza Party Day (15th May) and of course – International Sword Swallowers Day.
It’s that time of year again, the day once a year where sword swallowers from around the world simultaneously demonstrate their unusual skills. Held on the last Saturday every February at 2:28pm, in conjunction with National Swallowing Disorders Month, sword swallowers participate in “the big swallow”.
This year Johnny Strange performed various sword swallowing stunts at EventCity, Manchester, to celebrate International Sword Swallowing Day 2015. He performed in Dr. Phantasma’s 10 in 1 travelling Illusion Show who holds host to classic sideshow illusions from around the world such as “the giant bat”, “the man eating chicken”, “the infamous blade box”, “the girl with no middle” and more.

Down the hatch without a scratch – Happy sword swallowers day!If you arn’t aware of what Sword Swallowers Day is, allow me to explain. Sword Swallowers Day is a world wide event which dedicates and entire day to the art of sword swallowing, which will mark its 7th year this time around. Professional sword swallowers meet up at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! attractions around the world to demonstrate this ancient skill. The event falls on the last Saturday of February, to coincide with National Swallowing Disorders Month and is run by the organisation Sword Swallowers Association International (SSAI) which uses the events to do a number of things;
To provide the general public with knowledge on sword swallowing and dispel any myths.
To raise awareness that the 4000 year old art is still alive.
To honor sword swallowers of the past.
To raise awareness of the contributions sword swallowers have made to science and medicine.
To raise donations for Esophageal Cancer Research and the Injured Sword Swallowers Relief Fund (to which Ripley Entertainment match all donations collected).
If you haven’t visited it already, you can see some fantastic sword swallowing videos over at the official Johnny Strange YouTube channel.
